Migrant workers urged to embrace insurance

The executive director of the Insurance Regulatory Authority, Ibrahim Kaddunabi Lubega, has urged Ugandan migrant workers to enroll in the Uganda Migrant Workers Insurance Scheme to protect themselves from risks encountered during their employment abroad.

Speaking to journalists after the scheme’s launch at Hotel Africana in Kampala, Lubega highlighted a gap in the industry’s support for this vital group, which significantly contributes to the economy.

“We have approved this insurance scheme to address the challenges faced by our migrant workers during and after their work abroad,” he stated.

The scheme will cover migrant workers against risks such as death, accidents, torture, and failure by employers to meet their obligations. It also includes provisions for the education of workers’ children and transportation back to their home countries.

The initiative will be implemented by the National Insurance Company (NIC), who have committed to working closely with migrant workers to ensure prompt and efficient service.

Recruitment companies have welcomed the scheme, noting that it will restore confidence in the labour export industry, which has faced challenges due to limited government support and widespread concerns over the abuse of workers’ rights at foreign workplaces.
