Sheikh Mubajje urges government to ban TikTok

Mufti Shaban Mubajje has urged the government to ban TikTok, a popular social media platform, saying Satan has taken it over.

In his sermon during Eid-el Fitr prayers at Old Kampala Mosque, Mubajje said there is nothing good on TikTok.

“It is satan. The government banned Facebook, but at least it was well-regulated. But all the wrongdoers are on TikTok. It will be advisable for the government to ban it. Even some sheikhs are on TikTok. They preach a divisive message. They don’t preach about unity. They use it to disorganise the Muslims,” he said.

His plea is likely to be received with criticism given the fact that the platform is widely popular among young people, some of whom use it for business.

In the lead-up to the 2021 elections, the government banned Facebook in Uganda, another popular social media platform, claiming that it was being used to target regime supporters. Four years later, the government has not lifted the ban, but several people still access it using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) that mask their ISPs.
