2024 Police Crime Report: ‘Rwampara has more phone thieves than Kawempe’

For the second consecutive year, Ankole sub-region registered the highest number of theft cases in Uganda, according to the 2024 Annual Crime Report released by police yesterday. The sub-region topped the theft charts in 2023.

The 2024 report shows that a total of 61,529 cases involving theft of any kind were registered by the police in 2024, and of these, the Rwizi police region, which encompasses most of parts of Ankole, accounted for 5,933, the highest in any region.

Rwizi was followed by Kampala Metropolitan North with 5,383 cases, while Kidepo region registered the least number of theft cases with 219 cases.

The Rwizi police region comprises Mbarara, Isingiro, Kiruhuura, Rwampara, Ntungamo, Kazo, and Ibanda districts.

Rwampara district helped prop up Ankole’s theft record with 1,499 cases. Rwampara also took the prize of registering the highest number of mobile phone thefts in Uganda with 486 cases.

To put this figure into perspective, Rwampara registered almost double the cases of phone thefts reported in Kawempe division (218) last year. Kawempe includes areas of Bwaise, Kalerwe, Kazo Angola, and others.

On the whole, there was a 4.1% decrease in the volume of crimes reported to Police from 228,074 cases
registered in 2023 to 218,715 cases reported last year.
