Justice Musa Ssekaana has sentenced Isaac Ssemakadde, the president of the Uganda Law Society (ULS), to two years in prison for contempt of court.
Ssemakadde had been accused of using abusive and insulting statements against Ssekaana on social media.
The case emanates from a case filed by Mugisha Hashim Mugisha against Ssemakadde. It is alleged that between December 11 and December 22, Ssemakadde wrote deregatory messages against some judicial officers. He said some judges were corrupt and therefore had to go.
Ssemakadde had been severally summoned to appear before court to defend himself against the charges but he did not.
That us why the ruling was made in his absence. It now remains to be seen what is going to happen to the ULS president, whose radical approach to legal matters had rattled some. Our efforts to talk to Ssemkadde were futile.
However a lawyer told Bbeg Media that the court order will now have to be enforced by police and anytime Ssemakadde will be arrested. He is expected to appeal the ruling.
In 2022, Ssekaana sentenced Male Mabirizi, an activist lawyer, to 18 months in prison over similar charges.
