Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has castigated the youth for adopting hairstyles and dress codes that contradict Buganda culture and customs.
Mayiga, who was addressing clan leaders and their subjects at Bulange, Mengo, in preparation for a dialogue on culture and traditional norms in October.
“We are very disappointed with the way of life our youths are living, like the dress code, hairstyles, and this is not enough to make them useful. There is a need to add other attributes like hard work, respect, among others,” Mayiga said.
Katikkiro explained that while the youths can embrace modernity and new culture, they should preserve their own culture first.
He said Buganda’s culture has, over the years, been a symbol and signature of respect and civilisation.
The speaker of the Clan leaders, Augustine Namwama, said they have organised a public discourse on Buganda culture that will take place on October 24 at Mengo.
Namwama revealed that the discussion will also target Baganda living in the diaspora.
He said they would educate them about the clans, the partnership between clans and the kingdom, the role and preparation of last funeral rites, introduction ceremonies and cultural marriages, the clans and technology, cultural literature, and cultural tourism sites.
He appealed to clan leaders to prepare their clans for the Bika football tournament that kicks off on May 4.
