On May 4, while on a school trip to Western Uganda, Godfrey Muwumuza, a teacher at Kabojja Junior School in Kampala, asked one of his pupils to help him with a torch.
According to court documents, Muwumuza appeared to be looking for something in a suitcase. Since he was the pupil’s supervisor and they were sleeping in the same lodging facility, the pupil felt obliged to help.
Unaware of Muwumuza’s intentions, the pupil handed him the torch. However, Muwumuza pulled his hand and asked him to feel his genitals.
Shocked, the pupil stood still until a friend interrupted the scene. The teacher pretended to doze off and asked the victim to go and sleep. The victim told the friend what the teacher was trying to do to him.
The next day (May 5), the pupils were supposed to drive back to Kampala, and Muwumuza insisted that he sit near the pupil. While in the bus, Muwumuza took the boy’s hand, unzipped his trousers, and tried to get him to feel his genitals again!
The victim resisted and even changed seats. He asked a friend to help him with his mobile phone so that he could WhatsApp his mother.
According to court records, the victim then told his mother what had just happened to him. The mother was furious and immediately contacted the school. The school told her they would investigate the incident and take appropriate action.
She told them she would also report the matter to police, but some school administrators tried to dissuade her, warning that it would tarnish the name and reputation of the elite school. They assured her that they would handle the case to her satisfaction. She disregarded them and reported the case to the police.
Police swung into action, arrested Muwumuza, 43, and started their investigations. It interviewed some of the pupils who confirmed that the incident had taken place.
On Friday, Muwumuza was arraigned before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday and charged with attempted aggravated homosexuality under Section 3(3) of the Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023. He denied the charges.
He was remanded until May 19, 2025, for the hearing of his bail application. The school authorities declined to comment, saying the matter is before the court.
