The police in Kampala have arrested 21 suspects, including two women, for a series of robberies and assaults over the weekend.
Patrick Onyango, the spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said during the weekly media briefing that the suspects were dressed in NRM yellow T-shirts and targeted individuals heading to Kyadondo for President Museveni’s nomination on Saturday June 28.
According to videos circulating on social media, they also attacked motorists, businesspeople, and pedestrians near the National Theatre and UBC roundabout.
Using CCTV footage, Onyango said the authorities tracked and apprehended the suspects across various locations. The arrested individuals are currently detained at CPS Kampala and Wandegeya Police Station.
He said the victims have made statements, and police are preparing a case file for court, focusing on charges of simple robbery and assault.
Onyango said one of the suspects injured during an attempt to escape, is receiving medical treatment.
He said they are analyzing additional CCTV footage to identify others involved in related incidents. Authorities have urged victims who have not yet reported to come forward immediately.
