Lawyers criticize judiciary over Eron Kiiza case

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has criticized the judiciary over what they termed as mishandling the recent Eron Kiiza case.

Members of the ULS, under its banner of Radical New Bar, were addressing the press today at their weekly briefing.

Makerere University law don, Prof Christopher Mbazira, who was the keynote speaker, told the media they were shocked at how Kiiza’s case was handled.

Mbaziira warned lawyers about the crisis they are heading into, given the presence of such abuse and disrespect of human rights.

Amos Kuuku, human rights interest lawyer, celebrated Kiiza’s bail, adding that the bail money (Shs 20 million) is exorbitant.

Kuuku said bail fees were a relic of colonial rule and need to be scrapped to effectively dispense fair trial and access to justice.

Mary Gorette Nakamya, a lawyer, promised to educate the public via online means to seek and defend the rule of law and protection of human rights.

“We have come to help our people register their wills wherever they are to solve family conflicts that arise after the death of family members,” she said.
