Smart 24 TV, a business-oriented television station, has sent all its reporters on leave to ostensibly enable management make changes in programming.
Sources at the TV station told Bbeg Media that the reporters were told to wait for one month when they will be told the next move.
“They told us that they are going to make some changes in programming. They will communicate to us after one month,” a reporter who requested anonymity, told us.
The order, we have been told, has affected more than 20 staff.
The station, which started operations in 2019, will remain on air but will run syndicated programming from partner television stations.
We have been told that the station, owned by Nathan Nabeta, the Jinja East MP, has been struggling financially. In fact sources told us that staff had gone months without pay. In the same vein, there has been a high turn over of managers with many leaving because of irregular pay.
Some insiders told us they will not be surprised if the station eventually closes.
Nabeta previously owned NBS TV before he was bought out by Kin Kariisa who grew and expanded it into a media behemoth.
