The nomination period for candidates in Uganda’s special interest group elections concludes today.
These elections will select village committee members to represent three key societal groups: youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities. The Electoral Commission (EC) has been accepting nominations since June 2, with today marking the final opportunity to submit candidacies.
EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi urged all eligible Ugandans from these groups to participate.
“Today is the last chance for those eager to run, engage, and lead,” he emphasized. Nomination centers are operational from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at sub-county headquarters, division wards, and town councils nationwide.
Eligibility criteria include: youth candidates must be aged 18 to 30, older persons must be 60 or above, and persons with disabilities must meet specific legal requirements. These standards ensure fair representation for each group on the village committees.
The EC is calling on all qualified individuals to take part, stressing the value of electoral involvement. “Your vote is your voice,” Mucunguzi declared, underscoring its significance to Uganda’s democratic process.
These special interest group elections kick off the 2025–2026 general elections roadmap.
Following the close of nominations today, campaigning runs from June 12 to June 14. Voting will occur in phases: older persons vote on June 16, persons with disabilities on June 17, and youth on June 19.
This process empowers diverse Ugandans to influence their communities, offering a hopeful step forward.
