The chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC), Rt Rev Joseph Anthony Zziwa, has appealed to the government to consider electoral reforms ahead of the 2026 polls.
Bishop Zziwa was addressing the media during the release of the 27th pastoral letter by the UEC in Nsambya.
He said the church has observed that every election period is marred with anxiety, violence, and a sense of hopelessness. He accused security agencies of interference in elections that leads to violence.
Zziwa, who also serves as the bishop of Kiyinda Mityana, called upon all those in authority to see to it that comprehensive electoral reforms are made as recommended by the Supreme Court, political players, and civil society organizations.
With the reforms, Zziwa said a conducive environment will be created for voters and political parties to participate freely and effectively in the general elections.
The UEC highlighted the need to fight homicide, alcoholism, drug abuse, corruption, and embezzlement of public funds.
The church also criticized the continued detention of political prisoners, high infant mortality, and rising levels of unemployment among the youth.
The pastoral letters that address the Catholic Church’s views on the various problems facing the country have been released since 1962, when the country gained independence.
