The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has called on the government to prioritize investment in research and innovation as critical drivers of development in educational institutions.
Nawangwe made these remarks during the 18th graduation ceremony of Makerere University Business School (MUBS), where over 500 students graduated with various qualifications.
He emphasized that universities and other tertiary institutions must foster students’ engagement with advanced technology to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
“As we celebrate the achievements of our graduates, we are reminded that universities must prepare students not only for employment but also for leadership, innovation, and lifelong learning,” Nawangwe stated.

Prof. Moses Muhwezi, Principal of MUBS, announced that 515 students received postgraduate diplomas and certificates during the ceremony. Among them were 11 inmates from Luzira Prison.
The top-performing student, James Aluko Kazungu, achieved a perfect CGPA of 5.00 in the Diploma in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management.
Muhwezi highlighted the significance of supporting inmates at Luzira Prison, noting that the initiative aims to help them realize their dreams and rebuild their lives. “We are proud to be affiliated with Makerere University, fully integrated within its academic framework and benefiting from its esteemed reputation, resources, and experience,” he said.
Echoing Nawangwe, Muhwezi underscored the importance of research and innovation as key drivers of progress in the education sector.
