Opposition names new team to challenge NRM in Parliament

Some of the members appointed to the opposition's leadership team in the 12th Parliament

The opposition has unveiled a new leadership team that will oversee government accountability in the 12th Parliament.

The event was presided over by Lewis Rubongoya, the secretary general of the National Unity Platform (NUP), at the party headquarters in Kampala.

Rubongoya praised the outgoing shadow cabinet led by Joel Ssenyonyi and reappointed him to continue leading the opposition in Parliament.

“I would like to commend our previous shadow cabinet led by Joel Ssenyonyi and, because of your great work, we are tasking you again to lead the 0pposition in Parliament,” Rubongoya said.

The new line-up includes several fresh faces drawn from different opposition political parties.

Among the new entrants is Harriet Nakweede of NUP, who has been appointed Deputy Opposition Whip and Shadow Minister for the Presidency.

Independent legislator Karim Masaba will handle Cooperatives and Microfinance, while Sheila Amaniyo of NUP takes charge of Information and Anti-Corruption.

Ismail Kasule of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) was appointed Shadow Minister for Trade and Industry, while Dr Eunice Apio Otuko of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) will oversee Science, Innovation and Technology.

Okello Patrick Onguti of the Democratic Party (DP) was assigned the Local Government docket.

NUP’s Ssebina Gyaviira will head Finance, Planning and Economic Development, while Joan Alobo Acom of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) was appointed Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Sumayah Nabawanuka will serve in the Lands, Housing and Urban Development docket.

Other appointments include Dennis Sekabira for Internal Affairs, Jimmy Kanaabi for Public Service, Hakim Kizza Sawula for East African Community Affairs, Andrew Kaluya Kiiza for Education, and Moses Lukanga Musanje for Energy and Minerals.

Betty Naluyima, who previously served in the shadow cabinet, was reassigned to Gender, Labour and Social Development.

NUP also appointed Robert Maseruka to handle Youth and Children Affairs, while UPC’s Fred Jalameso was assigned Tourism and Wildlife.

Jamal Mukuve will oversee Water and Environment, while Patrick Kuteesa was appointed to Agriculture.

Abdullah Kiwanuka will serve as Shadow Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, while Zahara Luyurika takes charge of Kampala Capital City Authority Affairs.

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) member Asinansi Nyakato was appointed to Works and Transport.

Bulasio Zambali Mukasa will oversee Sports, while NUP’s Elias Nalukoola, the MP for Kawempe North, was appointed Shadow Attorney General.

Hussein Muyonjo will handle Culture and Performing Arts.
