NRM deploys nationwide teams ahead of LC elections

Richard Todwong described the upcoming elections as important for strengthening grassroots leadership

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has launched a nationwide mobilisation and monitoring exercise ahead of the forthcoming Local Council (LC) and Women Council elections, deploying senior party leaders and cadres across the country to coordinate campaign activities and support the party’s flag bearers.

Speaking at the NRM Secretariat in Kampala, the party secretary general, Richard Todwong, said the NRM has been following the electoral roadmap issued by the Electoral Commission (EC) and has completed key internal preparations for the grassroots elections.

Todwong said from July 11 to 14, NRM parish registrars endorsed nomination papers for the party’s candidates, while the official nomination exercise is taking place from July 15 to 19.

“I can confirm without fear of contradiction that the NRM has flag bearers in all villages for the LC1 chairperson positions and the Women Council elections,” Todwong said.

He described the upcoming elections as important for strengthening grassroots leadership and supporting the effective implementation of government programmes.

“The LC1 and LC2 elections are elections of the grassroots structures. As a party, we have the government programme of the Parish Development Model (PDM). It is very important that we elect leaders who support government and can work smoothly with it to ensure that our people fully participate in PDM programmes,” he said.

Todwong explained that LC2 chairpersons automatically become chairpersons of the Parish Development Committees, making their election critical to the successful implementation of the Parish Development Model and other government development programmes.

The NRM deputy secretary general, Rose Namayanja Nsereko, said the party has constituted nationwide coordination teams made up of members of the NRM secretariat and other party cadres.

She said the teams will serve as sub-regional coordinators under the supervision of members of the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).

Namayanja said the exercise will begin with sub-regional meetings bringing together district chairpersons, administrative secretaries, registrars and Members of Parliament to harmonise mobilisation strategies and guide party leaders on the roadmap for the elections.

She said the exercise will then move to the sub-county level, where the teams will meet NRM leaders and flag bearers before concluding with village barazas across the country.

Namayanja announced that on July 22, the NRM will hold village barazas in every village to campaign for its flag bearers, promote unity within the party and mobilise support ahead of polling day.

The party’s national treasurer, Barbara Nekesa Oundo said the Central Executive Committee (EC) had approved modest financial support to facilitate NRM flag bearers during the grassroots election campaigns.

She said the Secretariat’s mobilisation teams will remain deployed across the country until the Local Council and Women Council elections are concluded.

The NRM Director for Mobilisation, Rosemary Sseninde, said the programme has been organised around three categories of meetings in every region to ensure effective coordination and consistent message delivery.

She said the teams will hold meetings at the sub-regional, sub-county and village levels, enabling the party to engage leaders, flag bearers and supporters throughout the electoral process.
