The NRM grassroots elections in Makindye division yesterday were marred by violence and bickering amongst supporters after some candidates were stopped from participating.
One of the candidates, Yasin Omar, expressed bitterness over the refusal by the party to allow army veterans to take part in the ongoing elections.
“We are disappointed by the party election officials trying to block some candidates from contesting using unclear guidelines as an excuse,” Omar said.
A party official who preferred anonymity said candidates for veteran positions had to have evidence of a certificate of discharge from the army and other credentials.
Some members who had come to vote said they were being denied a chance to vote for their preferred candidates.
Tensions boiled over as supporters and officials exchanged words, leading to the deployment of security.
Omar told journalists that he was standing to consolidate the NRM’s achievements in the area. He called for unity among members and urged the youth to desist from drugs and alcohol.
Rashid Lwanga, who is the incumbent party treasurer at the parish, promised to unite and serve the party with dedication and loyalty.
The elections were later postponed to today (Saturday) at the NRM party headquarters after the guidance of Dr Tanga Odoi, the party’s election chief.
