Local leaders in Makerere have vowed to combat all forms of crime in their area, particularly targeting youth involved in unlawful behaviors, including those engaging in homosexuality, which is prohibited in Uganda.
Since 2023, area leaders have received reports that some youth residing in local hostels and rentals have been seducing others into homosexual activities. Following these reports, police initiated investigations, leading to the arrest and detention of some individuals at Wandegeya Police Station for further questioning.
According to a letter seen by Bbeg Media, Kasimu Lubowa, LC I chairman of the Industrial Zone in Kagugube Parish, informed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Wandegeya, about the numerous complaints about a group of women renting a room in the area who allegedly seduce others into sexual activities.
The letter stated that these women were seen publicly kissing and engaging in unlawful behaviors. Lubowa warned that the community was considering mob justice against them and urged the police to intervene promptly to prevent violence, as such actions could lead to loss of life.
The document specifically requested that the police ensure the women leave the area immediately, as the community no longer wanted them present.
The letter named Kelly Omoyit, Shamirah Nansereko (allegedly the group’s ringleader), and others as the individuals involved. A case regarding their alleged practice of homosexuality and recruitment was opened at Wandegeya Police Station in 2023.
One Makerere area leader emphasized that those involved must face punishment, including imprisonment, for seducing and recruiting others, which violates national law.
The entire community has been warned that anyone caught seducing others into such acts will be arrested and punished for committing a crime.
