Gov’t urges KCCA to eliminate Kampala’s poor drainage headache

The Ministry of Works and Transport has today assessed the impact of the recent city flooding on the newly constructed Kampala Flyover project along Entebbe Road.

The officials led by Andrew Kyambadde , a Hydrologist, attributed the cause of flooding to poor drainage due to poor physical planning by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

“We are a growing city, therefore, developments are happening within the water catchment areas, hence flooding. As we develop on the hills, the flow of water and silt is deposited in the Lubigi channel, hence leading to flooding.”

He blamed the city authority for the poor maintenance of the Nakivubo drainage channel, saying it has contributed to flooding within the city.

Kyambadde promised to collaborate with KCCA to see how this can be solved.

“We are also working to ensure that the Northern Bypass doesn’t experience a similar problem,” he said.

Jacob Asiimwe, who is in charge of road maintenance at the ministry, raised the challenge of narrow drainage outflows that he said needed to be widened to allow a smooth flow of water.

“Our current contractor, Nippon Parts, will be removing any debris, grass, and will reopen side drains and culvert lines,” Asiimwe said.

He said that as the line ministry, they have the mandate to maintain carriage ways and side drains every six months.

This comes at a time when many parts of the city have flooded due to heavy rains, leading to loss of property and lives.
