EC says it won’t extend voters update exercise for now

Political players and actors have urged the Independent Electoral Commission to extend the days for updating the voter’s register but the electoral body says the time is adequate.

Julius Mucunguzi, the spokesperson of the commission told Bbeg Media that the remaining five days were adequate for people to register.

“We think the remaining days are enough for every Ugandan who is willing to participate in the political process to register,” Mucunguzi said. He said for now, EC did not have plans of extending the exercise.

The exercise that started on January 20 is set to conclude on February 10, 2025.

However, many people said because of the various challenges there was need to extend the exercise.

FDC president Patrick Amuriat said the time was limited and many voters could miss out. He also implored the NRM to halt its voters’ update exercise to avoid sowing confusion among the people.

The Democratic Party spokesperson, Ismail Kirya, said in some parts of the country, there was inadequate equipment to undertake the exercise.

“In some parishes their no machines. How do you expect that all Ugandans to be registered in time?” he queried.

Other political activists like John Bukenya said that the voters’ registration process had started when many workers like teachers were not in their voting areas.

The voters’ register update is intended to establish the actual number of voters ahead of the 2026 general election.
