MC Kats, a popular entertainment presenter and event host and a mainstay on Uganda’s local TV scene, is set to leave NBS Television, Bbeg Media has learnt.
Sources at the Naguru-based broadcaster say Kats, who has been hosting the evening entertainment show After 5, has told management that he will exit the station at the end of the year to launch a YouTube channel. MC Kats had worked at NBS for seven years, having joined the station in 2018.
We have been told that Kat’s digital platform will focus on in-depth conversations with musicians and other creatives about the business, challenges, and politics of Uganda’s music industry.
NBS TV is yet to issue an official statement on his departure, and Kats has not publicly commented on the move, but multiple sources have told us that he has told management of his desire to leave.
Born Edwin Katamba, MC Kats has built a media career spanning more than two decades, largely centred on entertainment journalism, music promotion, and live event hosting. He first came to public attention in the early 20oos as a host of a Teen Show on WBS TV. He later morphed into an outspoken entertainment critic and presenter on TV, where his energetic style and blunt opinions quickly set him apart.
Before joining NBS TV, he worked at NTV, where he hosted the evening entertainment show. He later joined NBS TV, where he became a household name thanks to After 5.
Beyond television, MC Kats has been a sought-after master of ceremonies at concerts and album launches. His visibility has also extended to social media, where his commentary on music trends and celebrity behaviour often sparks debate.
In 2023, Kats publicly disclosed his HIV-positive status during a television broadcast, a moment that drew widespread attention and mixed reactions. Kats later said he hoped the disclosure would encourage testing and honest conversations about health by many young people.
Kats’ move to YouTube is a continuation of a broader shift by local media personalities towards independent digital platforms, where audiences are younger, and content is less constrained by traditional broadcast formats. Kasuku, a former presenter of Ddembe FM, was the first to test the waters. His YouTube channel is one of the most popular.
Earlier today, Brian Mulondo announced that he was leaving KFM where he had served for eight years. Mulondo, we have been told, is set to launch a podcast.
