Iran’s Foreign Minister, Dr Abbas Araghchi, has reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to fostering economic cooperation with member countries of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), emphasising Iran’s substantial economic potential to drive business and mutual prosperity.
Dr Araghchi was responding to remarks by President Museveni, who, during the opening of the 19th Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) at Speke Resort Munyonyo, urged member states to prioritise economic diplomacy.
Speaking to Bbeg Media, Dr Araghchi stressed the growing need for economic collaboration within the Global South.
“We welcome unity and economic partnerships among NAM member states to promote effective diplomacy and development within our alliance. This solidarity is vital for all our partners,” he said.
He commended President Museveni’s focus on mutual economic prosperity, describing it as essential for fostering unity and solidarity among member states.
Dr Araghchi noted that Iran possesses significant potential to collaborate with NAM countries to tackle these challenges while capitalising on trade opportunities and offering expertise in sectors where it holds a comparative advantage, such as oil and gas.
However, he expressed concern over what he described as “unfair” sanctions imposed on Iran by the United States and the European Union, which he said hinder cooperation with other nations.
Dr Araghchi extended an invitation to Ugandan entrepreneurs to visit Iran and explore trade opportunities with Iranian businesses. He also expressed gratitude to Iranian companies operating in Uganda, acknowledging their role in strengthening Uganda-Iran relations.
Dr Araghchi, who has served as Iran’s Foreign Minister since August 2024, brings extensive experience to his role. His previous positions include Ambassador to Finland and Japan, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a key negotiator in the 2015 nuclear deal.
