Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the CDF, has appointed Brig Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru as the acting commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC).
In a statement Col Chris Magezi, the acting spokesperson of the UPDF said Nyakikuru has also been granted the acting rank of Major General.
Nyakikuru over from Maj Gen David Mugisha, who is preparing to attend the National Defence College (NDC) course abroad in the coming months.
The SFC is the elite UPDF unit responsible for the personal security of President Museveni and as well as the protection of key national installations.
. “The UPDF thanks Major General David Mugisha for the outstanding tour of duty as commander SFC and wish him good luck in his strategic security studies,” Magezi’s statement read.
Nyakikuru was, until this appointment, the deputy commander of the SFC, a position he took up in June 2024 from Brig Gen Charity Bainababo. Before that, he commanded the SFC’s Commando Brigade.
He has led troops in some of Uganda’s most sensitive military operations. He played a role in the commando operations in Somalia that helped push Al Shabaab militants out of Mogadishu.
In 2013, he commanded commando units that helped block an attempt by Riek Machar to seize power from President Salva Kiir in South Sudan.
In 2021, Museveni upgraded the commando battalion under his command into a full brigade.
