“Some of you must be led,” Sseggona tells voter during bitter exchange

A charged meeting in Busiro East unfolded over the weekend after voters confronted their long-serving MP Medard Sseggona, who is seeking a fourth term after 15 years in office.

The air was thick with tension as a voter’s question put the MP on edge.

“You’ve been our MP for 15 years, and you’ve never seen a need to convene a meeting to hear our problems?” the unidentified voter asked.

Sseggona, visibly caught off guard, paused to gather his thoughts. Some people in the crowd had started cheering the voter.

“I have heard the concerns,” Sseggona responded calmly but some people kept shouting at him.

“It’s only decent that we listen to each other. I listened to him without interruption. I’m happy to see all of you, even those not happy to see me. Where I sense hate, I pay with love,” he said, his words aimed at  diffusing the growing frustration.

The voter’s challenge stemmed from years of perceived disconnect between the MP and his constituents.

Sseggona, first elected in 201i, reminded the crowd of his journey. “Not all of you voted for me back then,” he said, acknowledging the divided sentiments.

But when he offered accountability for his tenure, a voice from the crowd shouted, “We don’t want it!”

Undeterred, Sseggona pressed on.

“I am talking to those who asked for accountability,” he clarified. “The biggest problem is that some want to be heard but won’t listen. Some are meant to lead, while others must be led.”

The last statement, meant to assert his leadership, sparked murmurs. To some, it felt dismissive, implying a hierarchy that rankled those already skeptical of his record.

Sseggona recently returned forms indicating he wanted to be National Unity Platform’s flag bearer in Busiro East MP. He said the party needed “brilliant” people like him therefore it would be an abomination if he is not given the party ticket.
