The CDF Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba intends to contest for the presidency in 2013, Daudi Kabanda, the head of Muhoozi’s office has revealed.
Kabanda made the remarks during a meeting a press briefing attended by MPs and other leaders of PLU in Nakasero, Kampala.
“The pronouncement has been done and it is confirmed,” Kabanda said, adding that President Museveni had endorsed Muhoozi’s decision to seek the presidency in 2031.
Gen Muhoozi had already publicly announced last week that he intends to contest for the country’s highest political office in 2031.
In a series of posts on X, he said he would stand for president and expressed confidence that he would win.
The latest meeting came amid renewed discussion about comments attributed to Gen Muhoozi on social media and their possible implications for relations between Uganda and Rwanda.
The comments followed an online debate in which Gen Muhoozi made references to ethnic identities while disparaging his brother-in-law Odrek Rwabwogo.
However, Kabanda said the claims circulating on social media suggesting that Gen Muhoozi had insulted Rwandans or promoted ethnic extremism should not be treated as an accurate representation of his position.
He said Uganda and Rwanda have historically maintained close ties and share many social, cultural and political connections.
“Uganda and Rwanda have had a long, strong and cordial relationship, and there is a lot that we share in common,” Kabanda said.
He recalled the period when relations between the two countries became strained and the Uganda-Rwanda border was closed for several years.
“Please, whoever is circulating that information should restrain because it might put both countries in a very bad state,” Kabanda said.
The Uganda-Rwanda border was closed in February 2019 amid diplomatic tensions between Kampala and Kigali before reopening in January 2022.
