Members of the Rotary Club of Kampala North have visited the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) at Entebbe International Airport as part of the club’s vocational service programme aimed at exposing members to different professions and sectors.
The visit took place on September 17 and gave the rotarians an opportunity to learn more about Uganda’s aviation industry, the work of UCAA and the day-to-day operations involved in running the country’s main international airport.
The delegation was led by Rotarian Ronald Mutebi, who represented the club president during the visit.
The visitors were received by Christopher Omondi, UCAA’s Manager Operations, who briefed them on the Authority’s administrative structure, mandate and key responsibilities.
Omondi also shared information about some of UCAA’s achievements and the challenges involved in managing airport operations and maintaining efficient services in the aviation sector.
UCAA is responsible for regulating and overseeing civil aviation in Uganda, while its airport operations function covers areas such as passenger facilitation, airside operations, aircraft parking and marshalling, terminal operations, emergency response and other services required to keep airports operating safely and efficiently.
The briefing gave the rotarians a better understanding of the different activities that take place behind the scenes to keep Entebbe International Airport operating.
The delegation was also taken on a guided tour of the airport facilities, where members were able to see some of the infrastructure and services supporting airport operations.
A major highlight of the visit was the tour of the newly constructed passenger terminal building at Entebbe International Airport.
The new terminal is part of UCAA’s wider infrastructure development programme at the airport. UCAA has said the 20,000-square-metre passenger terminal is intended to increase the airport’s capacity and improve passenger handling as air traffic continues to grow.
The visit formed part of rotary’s vocational service, which encourages members to share professional knowledge, learn from other fields and use their expertise to contribute to communities.
For the Kampala North members, the visit provided an opportunity to move beyond their regular professional environments and gain a practical understanding of an industry that plays an important role in connecting Uganda to the rest of the world.
Entebbe International Airport is Uganda’s main international gateway and handles passenger and cargo traffic connecting the country to regional and international destinations.
UCAA has continued to invest in the airport’s infrastructure and operations as passenger traffic increases. The Authority has also highlighted the importance of efficient airport services to tourism, trade and wider economic activity.
The rotary delegation concluded the visit after touring the airport facilities and the new terminal, giving members a closer look at the infrastructure and systems that support Uganda’s aviation sector.
