Over 3,500 students set for Kampala University graduation

Prof Badru Kateregga

A total of 3,514 students are set to graduate with various academic qualifications at the 23rd graduation ceremony of Kampala University, scheduled for Thursday, April 23, at its Ggaba main campus.

Of the graduates, 1,812 are female and 1,702 are male.

This year’s ceremony will be held under the theme “Empowering a New Generation: AI Innovation and Sustainable Development.”

The university operates five campuses in Ggaba, Mutundwe, Luwero, Jinja and Masaka. It also hosts international students from countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Somalia, South Sudan, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Vice Chancellor and founding member of the university, Prof Badru Kateregga, said the institution has made significant progress in training professionals, particularly in medical and education fields.

However, he urged the government to increase support for private universities, especially in the areas of competence-based curricula and innovation-driven programmes.

“It is our responsibility as private universities, but we are constrained financially when it comes to supporting innovation and ICT courses,” Kateregga said.

He added that both students and academic staff are generating impactful ideas with the potential to transform key sectors and drive national development.

However, many of these ideas remain underutilised due to limited funding and institutional support.

Speaking on the theme, Kateregga also called on young people and digital platform users to act responsibly online and avoid spreading misinformation.

“Youth must use social media for constructive engagement that can move the nation forward,” he said.

The chancellor of the university, Prof Mondo Kagonyera, will preside over the ceremony and award certificates to the graduates.

Dr Maggie Kigozi has been confirmed as the chief guest.
