The National Unity Platform (NUP) has accused the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) of blocking some of its campaign rallies ahead of the Kalangala Woman MP by-election.

Speaking to Bbeg Media at Parliament, the shadow minister for Information, Sheila Amaniyo Dravile, said the opposition was concerned about what she described as interference with its campaign activities.

“We are very concerned about the actions of the NRM blocking us from campaigning to the residents of Kalangala,” Amaniyo said.

She said it was important for opposition leaders to reach different parts of Kalangala to understand the challenges facing residents and to engage voters directly.

According to Amaniyo, many communities in the island district continue to face difficulties accessing quality education and health services.

She argued that it was worrying that after nearly four decades of NRM rule, some residents still struggle to access adequate schools, medical facilities, and essential drugs.

Amaniyo further accused the ruling party of using intimidation and propaganda against opposition supporters. She also criticised the involvement of the military in the electoral process, saying security forces should remain neutral during elections.

Despite the challenges, she expressed confidence that NUP candidate Irene Nampala would perform strongly in the by-election.

Amaniyo said Nampala would build on the legacy of her late sister, former Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, who died earlier this year.

Nampala is facing competition from NRM candidate Aidah Nabayiga and three other independentHellen Flavia Nagawa, Independent candidate Sharifa Babirye Kaala, and another Independent candidate, Agnes Nassuna.

Amaniyo also raised concerns about transport services in the district. She said residents face difficulties travelling between the islands and the mainland, adding that ferry transport remains a major challenge for many people.

On the expected return of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi from the US, Amaniyo said party members were ready to welcome him back to Uganda.

She praised acting party president Dr Lina Zedriga and other NUP leaders for keeping the party active despite arrests of supporters, alleged human rights violations, and other challenges faced during the campaign period.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission says all electoral materials required for polling day are in place.

The by-election follows the death of former legislator Hellen Nakimuli. Voting is scheduled to take place on June 24.
