NRM intensifies campaign for Idah Nabayiga ahead of Kalangala by-election

NRM leaders moved through the villages of Kagoonya, Kivunza, Bunyama, and Kisujju, meeting residents

Leaders of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Bujumba sub-county have stepped up grassroots mobilisation efforts on Bunyama Island as they seek support for the party’s flag bearer, Idah Nabayiga, ahead of the Kalangala Woman MP by-election.

Bujumba sub-county NRM chairman John Mike Yiga led the mobilisation drive. Party leaders and local structures moved through the villages of Kagoonya, Kivunza, Bunyama and Kisujju, meeting residents and canvassing support for the NRM candidate.

Speaking during the campaign on Sunday, Yiga said the NRM continues to enjoy strong support in the area and expressed confidence that voters would once again back the ruling party.

He thanked residents of Kagoonya and Kivunza for supporting the NRM in previous elections and said local communities had pledged to deliver an even bigger victory for Nabayiga in the forthcoming by-election.

“Our district experienced a noticeable gap in development and direct government lobbying after voters elected an opposition representative,” Yiga said.

Yiga said Nabayiga demonstrated her ability to advocate for infrastructure improvements and other community needs during her previous term as Woman MP. He described her as the most suitable candidate to represent the district.

The NRM campaign team is expected to continue its door-to-door mobilisation across Bunyama Parish in the coming days. Campaign activities are scheduled to take place in the villages of Rwabaswa, Kasiisa, Kikuyege and Buyiiki.

The by-election, set to be held on June 24, was called following the death of former Kalangala Woman MP, Hellen Nakimuli, on April 19, 2026.

Nakimuli, who belonged to the National Unity Platform (NUP), died after complications arising from a surgical procedure in Kampala. She had been re-elected during the January 2026 general election but passed away before she could be sworn in for a new term.
