Museveni: “Besigye shouldn’t ask for forgiveness, he needs quick trial”

President Museveni has said incarcerated opposition lynchpin Dr Kizza Besigye does not require forgiveness but a quick trial to get out of his current ordeal.

Commenting on Besigye’s predicament for the first time, the president acknowledged the public anxiety surrounding his detention but maintained that the key question should be: “Why was Dr. Besigye arrested?”

On Besigye’s deteriorating health Museveni said prison medical facilities were available and that his doctors had visited him

“If there was any need for additional medical care, the government would be advised,” Museveni said.

Museveni said the delay in concluding Besigye’s case arose from the Supreme Court ruling that decreed that military courts did not have the power to try civilians.

This, Museveni said, means that the case needs to be transferred to civilian courts, a process that has taken time.

“Let us wait for the civilian court,” he said.

Museveni’s comments come amid mounting pressure to have Besigye released.
