From Scholar to Banker: How Equity Leaders Program turned Shimon Atuyambe’s dream into a career

For many university students in Uganda, higher education comes with financial uncertainty, academic pressure, and growing anxiety about finding employment after graduation.

For Shimon Atuyambe, however, one opportunity changed the course of her life.

What started as an academic achievement evolved into a life-changing journey through the Equity Leaders Program (ELP), transforming her from a student with ambition into a young banking professional with a clear sense of purpose.

Atuyambe was selected as one of Uganda’s pioneer Equity Leaders Program scholars in 2022 while studying at Solberg College on Rutooma Hill in Kabale District.

Being among the first cohort of scholars brought both excitement and uncertainty. There were no former participants to guide them and no clear example of what the programme would become.

Together with her fellow pioneer scholars, Atuyambe helped lay the foundation for a programme that is now impacting thousands of young Ugandans.

“When we joined, we thought we were simply entering a bank internship,” she recalled. “Later, we realised we were joining a family.”

That feeling would shape her experience throughout the programme.

From the beginning, the Equity Leaders Program exposed her to leadership training, mentorship, and practical workplace experience. These opportunities helped her grow both academically and professionally.

While at university, she also became active in student leadership. She first served as a secretary in one of the university clubs before taking on broader leadership responsibilities.

The programme also provided important financial support.

Through structured holiday internships at Equity Bank branches, scholars earned an income while gaining hands-on experience in the banking sector.

For Atuyambe, this reduced many of the financial challenges that university students often face.

“It gave us freedom,” she said. “We no longer had to worry constantly about what to eat or how to buy academic materials.”

With fewer financial pressures, she was able to focus more fully on her studies and personal development.

Her efforts paid off.

In 2024, Atuyambe graduated from Kyambogo University with a first-class bachelor’s degree in Guidance and Counselling.

However, graduation was not the end of her journey with Equity Bank. In many ways, it marked the beginning of a new chapter.

Her internship journey started at Equity Bank’s Kabale Branch before expanding to other branches where she received training, mentorship, and exposure to different areas of banking operations.

During this period, she worked in departments such as the Equity Leaders Program coordination team, Know Your Customer (KYC), and digital banking support.

These assignments helped her gain practical skills while allowing the bank to assess her work ethic, discipline, and ability to adapt.

Today, Atuyambe works as a Relationship Officer in Payments and Channels at Equity Bank Uganda’s Market Street Branch.

According to her, one of the programme’s greatest strengths is its ability to bridge the gap between education and employment.

“By the time we graduate, the bank already knows our discipline, our work ethic, and our potential,” she said.

Unlike many graduates who spend months or even years searching for employment, Atuyambe moved directly from university into a full-time job, supported by the skills, experience, and professional relationships she had built during the programme.

Speaking during the recent Cohort 5 Equity Leaders Program Commissioning event at Africa Bible University, she encouraged younger scholars to take full advantage of every opportunity available through the programme.

From internships and leadership positions to mentorship and networking opportunities, she urged them to approach the experience with purpose and commitment.

“Do not wait to be pushed,” she advised. “Be willing to learn, ask questions, and solve problems.”

As one of the pioneer scholars, Atuyambe says she is proud to see the programme continue to grow and expand its impact across Uganda.

Her story is more than a personal success.

It demonstrates what can happen when talent is matched with opportunity.

Through the Equity Leaders Program, Equity Bank Uganda is doing more than supporting academic excellence. The programme is creating career pathways, nurturing leadership, and preparing young people for meaningful futures.

For Atuyambe, the journey from student life in Kabale to a professional banking career is proof that with the right support, ambition can become achievement and dreams can become professions.
