The growth of the Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park is opening up new financing opportunities for manufacturers, suppliers and other businesses connected to the industrial hub following a partnership between Equity Bank Uganda and Tian Tang Group.

The partnership is aimed at helping businesses within the industrial ecosystem access financing while improving their financial management skills so they can grow and operate more sustainably.

Tian Tang Group has established a manufacturing ecosystem in Mbale that supports more than 2,000 enterprises and provides employment to about 15,000 Ugandans, according to information provided by the partners.

Under the partnership, Equity Bank will offer financial services tailored to businesses linked to the ecosystem. These will include working capital, business loans and corporate banking services.

Working capital is money that a business uses to meet its daily expenses, such as buying raw materials, paying workers and transporting goods. The financing could also help businesses buy machinery and increase their production capacity as manufacturing activity in the area expands.

The partnership is significant because the economic impact of an industrial park is not limited to the factories operating inside it.

As factories increase production, they need suppliers, transporters, construction companies, food businesses, traders and other service providers. Workers employed by the factories also create demand for housing, food, transport and other services.

Access to affordable and suitable financing could therefore help more small and medium-sized businesses participate in this wider industrial value chain.

The partnership will also include financial education for entrepreneurs and workers. Equity Bank will provide training in areas such as financial literacy, cash-flow management, bookkeeping, financial discipline and corporate governance.

For small businesses, keeping proper financial records can be particularly important when seeking loans from formal financial institutions. Clear records can help a business show how much money it earns, what it spends and whether it can repay a loan.

The training is therefore expected to help businesses improve their management practices while preparing them to access formal financing as they expand.

Laurent Zhang, the administrative manager at Tian Tang Group, said stronger cooperation between manufacturers and financial institutions would be important in supporting the growth of businesses connected to the industrial ecosystem.

ā€œBy strengthening this relationship, we can unlock the financial solutions needed to accelerate enterprise development and drive economic transformation,ā€ Zhang said.

Equity Bank Uganda managing director Gift Shoko said the partnership was part of the bank’s wider effort to connect financial services with industrial and socio-economic development.

ā€œThis initiative is dedicated to transforming lives within the local community, which directly aligns with our core mission to champion socio-economic prosperity and sustainable development,ā€ Shoko said.

Equity Bank has a distribution network of more than 50 branches, over 9,000 agency banking outlets and more than 2,000 merchants across Uganda, according to the bank.

The network could make it easier for businesses involved in the wider industrial value chain to access banking services without necessarily having to operate from within the industrial park.

The partnership also highlights a wider issue facing Uganda’s industrialisation drive: how to ensure that investment in industrial parks creates opportunities for businesses and workers beyond the factories themselves.

For Mbale, the expansion of manufacturing could generate opportunities for local enterprises that supply goods and services to factories, transport finished products, provide construction services and meet the daily needs of industrial workers.

The extent to which these businesses can access finance, improve their management systems and meet the requirements of larger manufacturers will be important in determining how widely the economic benefits of industrialisation are felt.

The Equity Bank and Tian Tang Group partnership therefore combines two elements that are important to business growth: access to finance and stronger financial management.

If effectively implemented, the initiative could help more businesses participate in the industrial economy around Mbale and extend the benefits of manufacturing investment beyond the factory gates.
