Calls for unity, peace dominate Martyrs Day celebrations [Video]

As pilgrims gathered to mark 140 years of the Uganda Martyrs, opposition politicians and other leaders emphasized the need for unity, selflessness, and integrity in politics ahead of the 2026 elections.

The commissioner of parliament and leader of the Democratic Front, Mathias Mpuuga, urged political leaders and pilgrims to strengthen their faith and reject hypocrisy, selfish interests, and disunity, which he said have fueled setbacks in Ugandan politics.

Speaking to Bbeg Media during the celebrations at the Catholic Shrine, Mpuuga said, “As political leaders and pilgrims, we must refrain from intolerance, self-gain, and mistrust in our actions as we lead our people.” He called for repentance from actions marked by dictatorship, corruption, embezzlement of public funds, human rights abuses, and attacks on the independence of state institutions.

Opposition member Francis Katabaazi praised the Martyrs’ celebrations as a symbol of unity and redemption, urging the nation to reflect on its mistakes. Wilfred Niwagaba, the MP for Ndorwa East, welcomed the event and called on the government to continue supporting historical heritage.

Vice President Jesca Alupo, the guest of honour who represented President Museveni at the Catholic Shrine, emphasized harmony between the state and the church, noting their complementary roles in development.

“No religion is better than another; all are equal before God,” she said affirming the government’s commitment to supporting religious tourism, with plans to be reflected in the national budget.

The celebrations at the Catholic Shrine began with a procession led by the organizing diocese under Bishop Christopher Kakooza, who commended pilgrims for their faith.

The Uganda Martyrs Day, marking 140 years since the martyrdom, drew pilgrims from across the world, highlighting both spiritual reflection and pressing political concerns.
