Proceedings in the case involving former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago were on Tuesday adjourned to July 9 after Uganda Prisons Service informed the court that he could not be produced because he is undergoing specialised medical investigations and treatment.

The development was communicated to the court during a closed-door session.

Speaking to journalists afterwards, Lukwago’s lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, said prison authorities had formally notified the court that their client was receiving treatment and was therefore unable to attend the hearing.

The case was adjourned to allow Lukwago time to continue with his treatment.

Lukwago is facing a charge of misprision of treason. Under the law, the offence is brought against a person who is accused of knowing about an alleged plan to commit treason but failing to report it to the authorities.

The charge stems from investigations into alleged activities linked to opposition behemoth Dr Kizza Besigye and his aide, Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya.

State prosecutors allege that Lukwago was aware of an alleged plot to overthrow the government but did not report the information to security agencies.

Lukwago has denied the accusation and maintains that the charge is politically motivated. His health has become a major concern since he was remanded to prison.

Last week, as a condition of his bail ruling, he was transferred from Luzira Prison to Mulago Hospital for specialised treatment after his family raised concerns about his deteriorating condition.

The case is expected to return to court on July 9, when the prosecution and defence are expected to receive an update on his health before proceedings can continue.
