Lukwago charged with misprision of treason, remanded until June 22

Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has been charged with misprision of treason before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court and remanded to Luzira Prison until June 22, 2026.

Misprision of treason is an offence that relates to a person allegedly having knowledge of a treasonous plan or activity but failing to report it to the relevant authorities.

A frail-looking Lukwago was presented before a packed court amid heavy security following his arrest earlier this week by security operatives.  His wife Zawedde Lubwama and other relatives appeared to be in a pensive mood.

Lukwago was dressed in a white T-shirt and black jacket. He denied the charges.

According to prosecution, investigations are still ongoing.

His Lawyer Medard Sseggona’s application for bail on health grounds was unsuccessful.

Lukwago’s appearance in court followed dramatic events at Kira Division Police Station where he had been driven today morning from an unknown place.

At Kira, his physician Dr Mathias Ssenyondo and other close friends were blocked from accessing him.

He was later driven to Makindye Chief Magistrates Court under tight security.

Lukwago’s legal troubles come against the backdrop of a wider security operation that has seen several opposition politicians, activists and supporters arrested over alleged links to activities that authorities say threaten national security.
