The chancellor of Makerere University, Dr Crispus Kiyonga, has urged graduates to become role models in the fight against corruption.
Kiyonga made the remarks during the 19th graduation ceremony of Makerere University Business School (MUBS), where 751 students graduated in various disciplines. The graduates received certificates, diplomas and postgraduate diplomas.
“As graduates, you need to be role models in the fight against corruption, which has affected some government institutions,” Kiyonga said.
He also encouraged graduates to promote peace and security by remaining vigilant against activities that could threaten national stability, including terrorism.
Commenting on what he described as growing moral decline among Ugandans, which he partly attributed to alcoholism, Kiyonga proposed reviving legislation to regulate alcohol consumption.
“In the 11th Parliament, Hon. Betty Nambooze wanted to introduce a Private Member’s Bill on alcoholism, but she was rejected. This time, I will support her,” he said.
The Principal of Makerere University Business School, Prof Moses Muhwezi, said the institution is currently implementing 10 projects linked to research and innovation.
“As we progressively move towards becoming a research and innovation-based institution, several projects focused on improving people’s lives have been achieved,” Muhwezi said.
The graduation ceremony was held under the theme: “Thriving in the 21st Century Workplace: Innovation, Adaptability and Sustainability.”
Meanwhile, 12 inmates at Luzira Upper Prison successfully completed diploma programmes under the university’s inmates’ education initiative.
The inmates graduated in absentia, in what university officials described as a demonstration of the transformative and rehabilitative power of education.
