The minister of state for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, has urged education stakeholders in Uganda to support government efforts to improve the sector, as exemplified by the late Mukalazi Kizito.

Muyingo made the remarks while speaking to journalists during funeral arrangements for Mukalazi, who died on April 24, 2026, after spending three days in the intensive care unit at Kampala Hospital.

At the time of his death at 71, Mukalazi had expanded Hormisadallen Schools into a network of campuses in areas including Gayaza, Kamwokya and Kyabando, offering licensed nursery and primary education.

Muyingo described Mukalazi as a close friend and a dedicated servant of the Kabaka, noting that they first met on a flight when he was still serving as Buganda’s minister for Education.

“Mukalazi was a committed educationist and a pioneer in developing education. We shall miss him,” Muyingo said.

Muyingo said Mukalazi worked closely with government to promote education, maintain standards and create employment opportunities for graduates.

He also credited Mukalazi with contributing to the recently passed National Teachers Bill, noting that policymakers benefited from his wide knowledge of the education sector.

The state minister for Kampala, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, praised Mukalazi for his humility, dedication and contribution to education.

Kyofatogabye said government has allocated additional funding to his ministry in the next budget, with part of it earmarked for improving education in the greater Kampala area.

He said the funds will support equipping city schools, managing waste and strengthening private education institutions.

He described Mukalazi as a professional teacher who created opportunities for many people, including members of his own family. He said the late’s work impacted millions of Ugandans through a network of schools that grew from a single institution.

Bishop David Kiganda of Christianity Focus Ministries praised Mukalazi as a humble servant of God who used education to improve people’s lives.

Mukalazi is survived by his widows, children and grandchildren. He will be buried at Kagembe near Matugga in Wakiso on April 28.
