Dr Musenero: Uganda manufactures, not assembles, electric cars

Dr Monica Musenero, the mnister for Science, Technology, and Innovation, has clarified that Kiira Motors “manufactures” not “assembles” electric powered vehicles.

Addressing journalists at the Media Centre today, Musenero said Kiira Motors is producing the Kayoola buses, including the fully electric Kayoola EVS and the Kayoola Coach, with approximately 30% of the components—such as the chassis, vehicle body, nuts and bolts, and electronics—being manufactured locally.

“We make these vehicles here but many Ugandans do not believe this,” she told journalists.

She revealed plans to expand into manufacturing car tires and batteries, signaling Uganda’s steady advancement in the science, innovation, and engineering sectors.

Dr. Musenero made these remarks while announcing the 11th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and 9th Africa Engineering Conference, scheduled for September 14–20, 2025, at the Speke Resort Convention Centre in Munyonyo, Kampala.

Hosted by the Uganda Institution of Professional Engineers (UIPE), she said the event will focus on sustainable engineering solutions, climate change, and resilient infrastructure, aligning with goals like clean energy, sustainable cities, and water sanitation.

The conference aims to foster collaboration among engineering professionals, academics, and industry leaders across Africa, providing a platform for local engineers to learn from global experts and drive socio-economic transformation through engineering excellence.

A specialized training on Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture will precede the main event from September 8–12, 2025.

The conference will also feature technical tours, cultural excursions, and networking opportunities, with the venue offering state-of-the-art facilities for up to 3,200 delegates.
