UPDF seeks musicians, dancers in national recruitment drive

Col Chris Magezi

For the first time in its history, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is specifically recruiting musicians and dancers as part of a major nationwide recruitment exercise aimed at bringing more specialised talent into the military.

Speaking at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, the acting UPDF spokesperson, Col Chris Magezi, said the recruitment exercise will run from June 10 to June 24, 2026.

Magezi did not explain why they need musicians and dancers in the army, but like many militaries around the world, the UPDF operates military bands and cultural groups that perform at national celebrations, military parades, state functions, diplomatic events and public ceremonies.

He said the army is seeking a wide range of professionals and skilled personnel. He said the recruitment targets applicants with qualifications ranging from the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) to master’s degree holders.

Besides the dancers and musicians, Magezi said they will recruit medical doctors, pilot instructors, teachers, science teachers, engineers, ICT specialists, aviation professionals, pharmacists, lawyers, meteorologists, health workers, and sports personnel.

“We do not expect anyone to use forged academic documents. Only genuine academic documents will be accepted,” Magezi said.

He warned that presenting fake academic qualifications is a criminal offence and urged all applicants to comply with the law.

According to Magezi, applications will be submitted through both online and physical channels.

He said applicants can apply through the official UPDF recruitment portal or submit physical applications with the assistance of District Internal Security Officers (DISOs) and local leaders.

He said every applicant must possess a valid National ID and must be a Ugandan citizen.

Magezi also revealed that a second phase of the recruitment exercise will involve physical screening and verification of successful applicants beginning on July 20.

He cautioned prospective recruits against being exploited by fraudsters posing as recruitment agents, stressing that the UPDF recruitment process is official and should be followed through the designated channels.
