PFF says Heroes Day has been turned into an NRM event

The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has slammed the country’s celebration of Heroes Day saying it has been turned into a partisan event by the NRM.

During a press briefing, the party said the event was too costly noting that Shs 5 billion had been budgeted for  handouts and dignitary allowances.

“The Uganda Revenue Authority collects Shs 72 billion daily, yet trade halts during these celebrations,” PFF said in a statement.

The party proposed consolidating all NRA-related events into one day to curb costs and refocus leadership amid poverty and joblessness.

Heroes Day, which falls today, honors Edidian Mukiibi Luttamaguzi, killed on June 9, 1981, for refusing to reveal President Museveni’s hiding place during the NRA bush war.

The party announced that now that it had been officially registered by the Electoral Commission, it will embark on mobilisation tours accross the country.

The PFF urged members to adhere to its constitution and guidelines, especially during the electoral period.  Michael Kabaziguruka, chairman of the Election Desk, issued expression of interest forms for candidates, available at district and constituency levels and electronically.

The party said it had authorized interim district and constituency leaders to process candidates for special interest groups in the ongoing general election nominations.

The party hailed its incacerated founder, Dr. Kizza Besigye as a “true Ugandan hero” for sacrificing his medical career to join the NRA against dictatorship and remaining committed to democracy, rule of law, and freedom.

It condemned President Museveni for imprisoning Besigye “countless times,” despite his role in saving lives during the Luwero war.

Dr. Besigye and Obed Lutale, were remanded to Luzira Prison by the General Court Martial on November 20, 2024.

The party called Besigye an inspiration and urged supporters to attend his court appearance at Nakawa Magistrate Court on Thursday, June 12, 2025, to demand justice.
