At least fifteen individuals alleged to be supporters of the NRM were yesterday charged with theft and assault at the Law Development Centre Court.
They allegedly committed the offences on the day President Museveni was nominated as the NRM flagbearer for the 2026 presidential election and as chairman of the ruling party.
The accused were alleged to have engaged in stealing mobile phones and assaulting people, actions deemed contrary to the law.
The accused individuals included Senkayi Martin (19), Salongo Kafeero (a mechanic), Katakwabwe Idris, Odudu Isma (a boda boda cyclist), Kisinzi Brian (from Kisimu near Katooke in Nansana Municipality), Wasswa Joseph, Matovu Muzamir, Kimbugwe Emma, Kabogoza, Semakula, Sempijja, and Kyambadde Jamil.
According to the state prosecution, they faced charges of stealing property, including Shs 200,000 in cash. They all pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Doreen Ainembabazi read the charges and inquired whether the accused had met the bail requirements, which included submitting a national identity card, an introduction letter from the LC1 (local council), and permanent addresses of three sureties through the Electronic Court Case Management System (ECCMIS).
Due to delays in providing these documents, the magistrate remanded the accused to Luzira Prison until July 16, 2025, when the case is scheduled for further hearing.
The court proceedings were emotionally charged, with some accused and their relatives visibly distressed, some crying and asserting their innocence. The magistrate urged them to remain composed, emphasizing that they were in a “temple of justice” and must follow the legal process to secure their release.
Some of the relatives of the accused expressed frustration, alleging that a local councillor had mobilized the youths to attend the NRM event with promises of Shs 12,000 and party T-shirts, only for them to be detained. They appealed to President Museveni to intervene and secure the release of their sons, affirming their continued loyalty to the NRM.
