Wakiso chairperson Lwanga Bwanika has decried the poor road infrastructure in the district, especially following the merger of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) with the Ministry of Works.
Bwanika stated that since the merger, all roads previously managed by UNRA have been abandoned, leading to numerous accidents.
“There is still a problem between UNRA and the contractors. In Wakiso, all roads that were under UNRA have been abandoned, causing many accidents on these roads,” Bwanika said.
Bwanika, who is an aspirant for Busiro South, made these remarks during a meeting with the district infrastructure committee, convened to assess the state of the roads in the district.
Bwanika promised to write to the Ministry of Works to arrange a meeting between their engineers and the district’s engineers to find a way forward.
“We want to know which department replaced UNRA and which one replaced the Road Fund, because we still receive invoices in the names of both,” Bwanika stated.
Bwanika urged leaders to seek remedies and alternative sources of funding to maintain the roads.
“These roads are in a deplorable state due to lack of maintenance. Although budgets have been passed, we need to revisit them and secure funds to maintain these roads,” Bwanika said.
In the same meeting, other leaders complained about inadequate funding and lack of maintenance for the roads in the district.
