A section of MPs and former legislators have welcomed the ongoing corruption probe involving former speaker Anita Among, saying the investigations could help restore public trust in Parliament.

Speaking to Bbeg Media, Jimmy Akena, the former Lira Municipality MP, said the investigations should be thorough and followed to their logical conclusion.

“I will pray that there is going to be a follow-up and an in-depth investigation into the matter. Basically, we are going to have a serious introspection into what should be happening in our country,” Akena said.

Former Kajara County legislator Michael Timuzungu Kamugisha said the ongoing developments were not surprising, arguing that warning signs had emerged during the controversial censure attempts against parliamentary commissioners over service awards.

“What is happening at Parliament is something we foresaw some time back. Some of us even decided to censure the parliamentary commissioners over the controversial service awards,” Kamugisha said.

“We were trying to cleanse Parliament. However, since we are human, we could not go far because we also had inequities,” he added.

Former Bungangaizi County MP Josephat Tumwesigye described the probe as a sign that public accountability was beginning to take shape following the swearing-in of the 12th Parliament presided over by Yoweri Museveni.

“I think this is a true indicator of ‘kisanji no sleep’ originating from President Museveni’s recent swearing-in for the 12th Parliament. It is regrettable. However, we should look at it from a wider perspective because no one is 100 percent clean,” Tumwesigye said.

Tumwesigye added that the investigations should not focus on one individual alone.
