PLU rejects Akena’s call for Gen Muhoozi to resign

Kabanda addressing the media

Speaking to journalists, David Kabanda, the head of the office of the chairman of PLU, said they have full confidence in Gen Muhoozi and insisted that he continues to enjoy the support of many Ugandans.

“As PLU, we believe in Gen Muhoozi, and we believe the population also supports him,” Kabanda said.

He accused Akena, the president of Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), of unfairly attacking the army chief and urged him to stop making what he described as politically motivated statements.

Kabanda also turned his attention to Akena’s wife, former Gender Minister Betty Amongi.

He alleged that investigations would be carried out into claims that she mismanaged public funds while serving in government. Kabanda claimed that Amongi used public resources to acquire several properties, although he did not provide evidence to support the allegations.

“We are aware of allegations that during her time…. Amongi mismanaged public funds and acquired a lot of property. Those issues must be investigated,” Kabanda said.

He further criticised Akena’s leadership of the UPC, claiming he had failed to rebuild and strengthen the party.

“You are not a perfect person. You have failed to develop the UPC into a stronger political party,” Kabanda said.

Kabanda also dismissed accusations by UPC leaders that Gen Muhoozi was responsible for the deaths of Ugandans.

He instead accused Akena of raising issues that, in his view, lacked evidence and called on the UPC leader to retire from active politics.

The PLU deputy chairperson said the organisation would continue speaking out against corruption.

“We have not sat back. We are hunting for the corrupt,” Kabanda said, warning that public officials accused of corruption should be prepared to account for their actions.

Kabanda also reaffirmed PLU’s political cooperation with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

He said the organisation would actively mobilise Ugandans to participate in the upcoming LC1 elections as part of the cooperation agreement between PLU and the NRM.

“It is our mandate because we signed an agreement with the NRM to work together politically,” he said.

Neither Akena nor Amongi had responded to Kabanda’s allegations by the time of publication.
