Namilyango College has credited its old boys’ savings and credit cooperative (SACCO) for playing a major role in improving the school’s infrastructure and supporting its growing development agenda.

Speaking during the climax of the school’s two-week annual inter-house sports competition at the college sports grounds in Mukono, headmaster Constantine Mpuuga Sajabbi praised the leadership of the Namilyango College Old Boys Association (NACOBA) for successfully managing the investment project.

He said the Sacco has grown into one of the biggest school-based investment initiatives in the country, with assets worth about Shs 4.5 billion.

Mpuuga said proceeds from the Sacco are being reinvested into projects that directly benefit the school and its students.

He said the funds have supported the construction of a new dormitory for A-Level boys, the tarmacking of the school’s internal road network, and the expansion of the college farm.

According to the headmaster, the farm now supplies fresh vegetables, milk from the school’s dairy cows, and bread produced by the college’s confectionery facility, helping to meet the dietary needs of students.

He also revealed that the Peregrine Kibuuka Endowment Fund, which supports academically gifted but financially disadvantaged students, has grown to Shs 350 million.

Mpuuga appealed to former students, parents, friends, and well-wishers of the college to continue supporting efforts aimed at improving the school’s infrastructure and maintaining its strong academic performance.

The chief guest, Silver Tindizilarira, assistant commissioner in the Ministry of Local Government, congratulated Hanlon House for winning the overall championship with 473 points.

Billington House finished second with 466 points, while Mukasa House came third with 441 points. The competition attracted 12 houses that competed in 13 sporting disciplines.

Tindizilarira said the government is implementing a presidential directive requiring all ministries, departments and agencies to conduct weekly physical fitness activities to promote good health among public servants.

He said schools should also treat sports and physical exercise as an important policy requirement rather than an optional activity.

He commended Mpuuga for effectively implementing the directive, saying regular participation in sports allows students to develop their talents and become successful athletes in the future.

The college’s games master, Christopher Oluk, thanked the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) for providing technical and logistical support to the school.

He said the support enabled Namilyango College to qualify for the national championships in six different sporting disciplines.
