The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has awarded renowned media consultant and researcher Dr Joel Isabirye the contract to establish and operationalise its planned radio station after he emerged the best evaluated bidder in a competitive procurement process.

According to information from KCCA, nine media service providers submitted bids for the project. Following the evaluation process, Dr Isabirye was selected to spearhead the development of the station, which is expected to become one of the Authority’s key public communication platforms.

The proposed radio will serve as a public service broadcaster dedicated to providing residents with timely and accurate information about activities, programmes, services and policies being implemented by the city authority.

KCCA officials said the station will help strengthen communication between KCCA and the people of Kampala by providing regular updates on issues such as urban planning, road infrastructure, sanitation, public health, law enforcement, revenue collection and community development programmes.

Currently, KCCA relies on private radio, television, print and digital media platforms to communicate with the public.

While KCCA said these channels will continue to be used, the new radio station is expected to provide a central and consistent source of information directly managed by the Authority.

Dr Isabirye is one of Uganda’s most experienced media consultants and broadcasters. Over the years, he has been involved in the establishment, restructuring and management of several radio and television stations across the country.

His media consultancy work has included radio station start-ups, audience research, content strategy development, newsroom organisation, staff training, broadcast management systems and media business development.

He has also provided technical and strategic support to both commercial and public broadcasters.
