From Kibuli Slums to Big Dreams: How Equity Bank is transforming Reagan Tumusiime’s future through education

For many young Ugandans, success begins as a distant dream shaped by ambition but often limited by circumstance.

For Reagan Tumusiime Gibril, that dream started in the crowded slums of Kibuli and has steadily grown through determination, hard work, and an opportunity offered by Equity Bank Uganda.

Tumusiime, a student of God Cares High School in Wakiso District, is one of the beneficiaries of the Equity Leaders Program (ELP), Equity Bank’s flagship education and leadership initiative that supports academically talented young people and prepares them for future leadership roles.

His story is one of resilience, curiosity, and transformation.

Born in Fort Portal, Tumusiime later moved to Kampala with his family in search of better opportunities. He grew up in Kibuli under the care of his single mother, facing many of the challenges common to children from low-income communities.

Adjusting to life in Kampala was not easy. At school, Tumusiime struggled to fit in. He was often self-conscious about his accent and limited command of English and feared being laughed at by his classmates.

However, his life changed unexpectedly when he was in Primary Four.

While walking through his neighbourhood, Tumusiime came across what many people would have considered useless scrap: a broken laptop that had been abandoned by the roadside.

Curious about how it worked, he carried it home and tried to power it using spare batteries. To his surprise, the machine came to life.

That moment sparked a lifelong interest in technology.

“It changed something in me,” Tumusiime recalls.

The once-shy boy from Kibuli became fascinated by computers and technology. What started as curiosity soon developed into a dream of becoming a computer engineer.

Motivated by that goal, Tumusiime dedicated himself to his studies. Over the years, he grew in confidence and academic ability.

By the time he reached Senior Six, he had transformed from a timid student struggling to fit in into a focused young man with a clear vision for his future.

His hard work paid off when he scored 20 points in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examinations.

Despite his strong results, Tumusiime never expected to be selected for the Equity Leaders Program.

With hundreds of high-performing students and schools in Wakiso, he believed competition for the programme would be extremely tough.

Then came another life-changing moment.

His mother received a phone call from Equity Bank informing her that Tumusiime had been selected among the district’s top-performing students to join the programme.

The news brought joy and excitement to the family.

For Tumusiime, it was proof that discipline, persistence, and hard work can create opportunities regardless of one’s background.

Through the Equity Leaders Program, Equity Bank Uganda supports bright but often disadvantaged students through leadership training, mentorship, internship opportunities, university counselling, and exposure to global academic and professional networks.

The programme goes beyond academic achievement by helping scholars develop confidence, professionalism, discipline, and leadership skills.

Tumusiime says the programme has transformed the way he sees himself and his future.

“It helped me think beyond my environment and dream bigger,” he says.

Through mentorship and leadership training, he has learned how to set clear goals and prepare for a future in which he can use technology to solve problems and make a positive impact on society.

He also draws inspiration from a message shared by Equity Bank Uganda managing director Gift Shoko during the scholars’ induction programme.

“If you don’t know where you are going, every road will take you nowhere,” Shoko told the students.

Tumusiime says those words continue to guide him as he works towards achieving his ambitions.

Today, he no longer sees his circumstances as barriers to success. Instead, he views challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.

His story is one of many examples of how Equity Bank Uganda is using education as a tool for social and economic transformation.

Through initiatives such as the Equity Leaders Program, the bank is doing more than recognising academic excellence. It is opening doors, nurturing talent, and helping to shape a new generation of leaders determined to transform Uganda’s future.

For Tumusiime, the journey from the narrow alleys of Kibuli to bigger dreams is only beginning.
