Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has tasked Buganda’s chiefs at all levels to spearhead efforts aimed at restoring the Buganda Kingdom’s pride and former glory.
Mayiga made the remarks during a thanksgiving ceremony and Duwa prayers organised for Kyadondo County chief, Ahmed Magandazi Matovu, at Nalyamagonja near Manyangwa in Wakiso.
The function was held to celebrate the completion of Magandazi’s multi-billion-shilling home and to give thanks for his life and family.
Addressing guests, Mayiga said the current generation of Kabaka’s chiefs had gone beyond the traditional role of collecting taxes and envujjo, and were now actively contributing resources, ideas, and leadership towards the growth of the kingdom.
“Unlike the past Kabaka’s chiefs who mainly collected taxes and envujjo, today’s chiefs such as Kaggo, Sekiboobo, Mukwenda, Muteesa, Kayima, and Kitunzi are contributing resources and wisdom towards running kingdom affairs,” Mayiga said.
He commended Magandazi for what he described as exceptional and exemplary service to the Buganda Kingdom.
He credited the Kyadondo chief for mobilising support for kingdom programmes through luwalo collections, the Masaza football tournament, youth and women development projects, coffee growing under the Emmwanyi Terimba initiative, and participation in the Kabaka Birthday Run aimed at fighting HIV/AIDS.
Mayiga also urged Buganda subjects to embrace the culture of thanksgiving, saying gratitude has always been part of Buganda’s traditions.
Speaking at the event, Magandazi thanked Allah for blessing him with life, family, and success. He also thanked the Katikkiro for attending the celebration together with his family and friends.
“Owekitiibwa ennyo Katikkiro, I am very glad that you accepted to celebrate with my family and me. I want to declare that I will remain obedient and loyal to the throne, and my doors remain open to listen to Kabaka’s subjects,” Magandazi said.
The Kyadondo chief encouraged young people to remain hardworking despite existing challenges, saying determination and discipline were key to success.
He also advised parents to gradually hand over responsibilities and businesses to their children as they grow older in order to ensure continuity and sustainability of family enterprises.
Minsa Kabanda, the Minister for Kampala, praised Mayiga for working with transparent chiefs who openly showcase achievements earned through hard work rather than corruption.
Wakiso Woman MP Betty Ethel Naluyima also commended Magandazi for constructing what she described as a magnificent home.
She encouraged residents to invest in improving their lives and living conditions through hard work to reduce stress and depression.
