Buganda Kingdom has praised its working relationship with the central government, describing it as key to delivering its socio-economic development programmes.

The Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, made the remarks while addressing journalists at his official residence in Mengo ahead of celebrations marking his 13th anniversary in office.

“I want to note that there is a good working relationship between the kingdom and the central government. When I want to meet ministers and officials, I do, and you have seen them at Bulange on several occasions. We thank them for the support,” Mayiga said.

He added that the Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, maintains cordial relations with President Museveni, noting that the two leaders engage regularly on issues affecting development in Buganda and the country at large.

Mayiga said the cooperation has enabled the kingdom to implement a range of programmes during his tenure. These include the Emmwanyi Terimba initiative, the completion of the Kasubi Royal Tombs, and the renovation of the Mengo Royal Palace.

He also cited the granting of a charter to Muteesa I Royal University, as well as the construction of the Muganzirwaza and Masengere buildings, which he said are generating revenue for the kingdom.

Other achievements include strengthening the Buganda Land Board (BLB), improving administrative systems through monitoring and auditing, and promoting merit-based recruitment.

Mayiga said the kingdom has prioritised youth empowerment by establishing youth councils from village to county level.

He also highlighted sports programmes such as the Bika and Masaza football tournaments, which he said have mobilised subjects across counties, including Mawokota, Buddu, Buwekula, Mawogola, Kyadondo, Ssingo and Busiro.

Additional sports promoted by the kingdom include wrestling, omweso, football and netball, which have been extended to schools and communities.

The Katikkiro warned about the continued spread of HIV/AIDS and urged the public to attend medical camps organised by the kingdom for counselling, testing and cancer screening.

He said the kingdom has also worked to protect its land and properties from encroachment, while partnering with organisations such as Wells of Life to provide clean water, Stanbic Bank Uganda to support agro-based initiatives, and Rotary International to deliver medical outreach services.

Mayiga commended the government for supporting environmental conservation efforts, including tree planting, and for expanding access to clean water in rural areas.

He noted that health campaigns such as the Kabaka Birthday Run and the End of Year Enkuuka festival have contributed to efforts to combat HIV/AIDS.

However, despite the cordial relations, Mayiga urged the government to clear outstanding rent arrears on kingdom properties occupied by public institutions.

These include land hosting the Makindye Military Police Barracks, State House Entebbe, and various local government facilities, as well as the disputed 9,000 square miles of land.
