Opposition invited for Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony

NRM's Richard Todwong and Milly Babalanda

The government has intensified preparations for the swearing-in ceremony of President Museveni, scheduled for May 12, 2026, as international guests confirm their attendance.

Officials say delegations from across Africa and beyond are expected to arrive in Kampala to witness the inauguration, underscoring the regional significance of the event.

Museveni, the NRM candidate, secured victory in the January 15, 2026, general election with 71.65% of the vote. He was followed by Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu of the National Unity Platform.

The minister for the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, said the government is fully in control of the preparations and will meet the entire cost of the ceremony.

Babalanda also highlighted peace and security as key achievements of the NRM government since it came to power in 1986.

“I am glad to say that peace is an enabler of development. Without peace, things like trade, industrialisation, and infrastructure development cannot be achieved,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the NRM, Richard Todwong, confirmed that opposition political parties will be invited to attend the ceremony through the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) and the National Consultative Forum (NCF).

“We acknowledge the opposition leaders, and we are in the process of sending invitations to them. Whether they attend or not is a different matter, but the NRM government is always determined to work with the opposition,” Todwong said.

He added that at least 19 political parties from across the world have been invited to witness the event. These include South Africa’s African National Congress, Tanzania’s Chama Cha Mapinduzi, and Rwanda’s Rwandan Patriotic Front.

Security agencies are also expected to maintain heightened vigilance in the lead-up to the ceremony, with authorities emphasising stability as a cornerstone of the country’s development agenda.
