The government has approved Shs130.4 billion to upgrade eight training grounds ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) tournament.

The facilities earmarked for renovation include FUFA Kadiba Stadium, Pece Stadium, Kyambogo University Grounds, KISU Pitch, Muteesa II Stadium, and the training pitch at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The update was confirmed by Dr Denis Mujimba, chairperson of the AFCON local organising committee.

Officials from the ministry of Education and Sports said preparations are in high gear as Uganda gears up to co-host the tournament alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

“AFCON is a major tournament. Uganda will host at least 5,000 visitors as a result,” Mujimba said.

He urged businesses to take advantage of the opportunities that will come with the competition, particularly in the hospitality and transport sectors.

“Those in hospitality services such as hotels, apartments and lodges, as well as transport providers, should position themselves to benefit. The Ministry of Tourism and the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) will guide stakeholders on how to access these opportunities,” he added.

Mujimba also revealed that Uganda is hosting a two-day high-level workshop bringing together officials from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and representatives from the three host nations.

The workshop will focus on technical aspects of the tournament and assess the progress of preparations.

The government has earmarked a total of Shs905 billion for the overall organisation and hosting of AFCON 2027.
