Airtel Uganda has announced plans to equip 30 Muslim schools in Buganda with internet and information communication technology facilities to strengthen digital learning and bridge gaps in internet and social media use among students.
The announcement was made during a breaking of the fast event organised by the Buganda Kingdom at Bulange in Mengo.
Ali Balunywa, Director of Sales and Distribution, Core Market at Airtel Uganda, said the initiative is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility activities during the holy month of Ramadhan.
“This year we shall be working with 30 Muslim schools in Buganda to support them with ICT, equip them with computers and assist them on how to use these facilities because this is a very important saddaq in this holy month of Ramadhan,” Balunywa said.
He said each of the selected schools will be connected to Airtel Wi-Fi and supported with ICT equipment including tablets, computers, laptops and accessories. The company will also provide training to ensure students and teachers are able to effectively use the facilities.
Balunywa noted that the intervention is intended to address gaps in digital access and responsible use of the internet and social media among learners.
He added that last year Airtel Uganda supported mosques across the country with various initiatives, which he said strengthened collaboration between the company and the Muslim community.
Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, commended Airtel Uganda for supporting capacity building in Muslim schools within Buganda.
Mayiga also urged newly elected Buganda legislators to prioritise the kingdom’s interests during legislative debates and decision-making processes, instead of pursuing personal interests.
Sheikh Yasin Kiwewa, who represented the Supreme Mufti from Kibuli, cautioned women and girls against indecent dressing, which he said exposes them to social risks including HIV infection.
